The relationship too, between Lord Essex and Elizabeth, is most accurately drawn. The prose is unusual for its distinction, and the wit-often sexual satire-adequate enough to be a constant delight. The book's humour is sufficiently competent to raise loud laughter. The historical details in such matters as dress, diet and customs are particulatrly informative. In short this is a novel to get the Parnassus Press off to an excellent start. Roger Bowdler, the author of 'Sense and Sensuality', 'The Bawd's Footman' and others, is peculiarly gifted with the historical novel.
