Out Of Print... A new method of design, at once systematic and comprehensive, is developed in this book which is based on the authors thirty years practical experience in various industries. For this reason, the techniques described can be applied to virtually all products capable of manufacture by engineering methods. First, the fundamental characteristics of products and their design are defined and analysed. Design requirements and factors are next considered, followed by examination of a practical approach to the logical solution of design problems. A general design method is then described, step by step in a series of chapters on briefing, investigation, design concept, functional design, designing for use, manufacture and external appearance. Specialist aspects such as manufacturing, specification and test, standardization, value engineering, drafting and documentation are all individually dealt with but brought within the framework of a general systematic approach to design problems. Throughout, the emphasis of the book is that the designer should in every situation bear in mind all aspects of the problem. And while, necessarily, considerable attention is given to practical and economic limitationsin designing for convenient production, avoidance of needless variety or complexity, designing for the utilization of readily available parts and manufacturing capacity, etcthe author is at pains to stress that the artistic nature of the task should not be denied. The text is complemented by more than 40 line drawings and 20 photographs including illustrations of recent designs which have won the Duke of Edinburghs award or that of the Council of Industrial Design.
