Description

RARE Out Of Print... This volume contains the whole of the publications of the first History of Science Society ever formed in the world as well as the prospectus of the Society setting out its rules, aims, intended publications and list of members (under the presidency of the Duke of Sussex). The late George Sarton made this the first entry in his section of Natural Societies Devoted to the History of Science in A Guide to the History of Science p. 249. Only one study of the Society has so far appeared: a slight account by H.W. Dickinson entitled J. 0. Halliwell and the Historical Society of Science in ISIS, volume 18, pp. 126-132 in 1932. The two volumes of its publications are of considerable rarity and very real intrinsic worth. The life of the Society was very short; about two years it would seem. The first surviving society Hamburg DEUTSCHE GESELL-SCHAFT FUR GESCHICHTE DER MEDIZIN UND DER NATLJRW was inaugurated in 1901. The alchemical symbol reproduced on our front cover was used on both of the Societys publications without comment. It appears in the title pages of the early works by John Dee.
