Description

Out Of Print... The spiritual distinction of St. Paul, one of the greatest figures of antiquity, is amply shown in his many Epistles. In this novel, Moelwyn Merchant has explored the passionate traveller and the profound emotional dedication of his friendships. This is done by means of the letters of Paul and his many friends in Jerusalem and throughout the Roman Empire. As in the previous novels, 'Jeshua' (a life of Christ) and 'Fire from the Heights' (a life of Elijah), Merchant's aim is to add day-by-day immediacy to the Biblical narrative while remaining faithful to its truths. Moelwyn Merchant was born in Port Talbot in 1913 and educated in University College, Cardiff, where he was President of the Union and read Honours degrees in English and History. He became a Reader in the University of Wales, Professor of English in the University of Exeter and Willert Professor in the University of Chicago. He was Canon and Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral and then returned to Wales to become Vicar of Llanddewibrefi. He now lives in Leamington Spa. Apart from many works of academic criticism, he has published three books of poetry, Breaking the Code (1975), No Dark Glass (1979) and Confrontation of Angels (1986). He has written many libretti for Alun Hoddinott, including The Tree of Life (the Three Choirs Festival, 1972). A Bundle of Papyrus is his third novel, following Jeshua (1987) and Fire from the Heights (1989). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Prompted by his friend Barbara Hepworrh, he became a sculptor and has had over thirty one-man shows. He has shared three exhibitions with Josef Herman.
