In the sixteenth century this is a-lawless land with the dreaded Red Bandits of Mawddwy creating havoc and fear among the people. To her dismay, Annes discovers that their cousin, Sion Rhys, has some sympathy with these outlaws, being torn between their cause and his own future career as a lawyer. Marion Eames grew up not far from Red Bandit country and has been familiar from childhood with the legends surrounding the outlaws.
