Out Of Print... One of the major problems of our society is the relationship between business and society. The authors of this book trace the development of modern thought on this subject from the early days of the Industrial Revolution and the gulf it created between economic growth and widespread industrial poverty, to the present time of a persistent inflation problem and persistent management and union conflict. They show that although economic self-interest is still the major factor in all industrial societies, the underlying logic of business has radically altered. The size of the enterprise, the influence of new methods of communication, a different social climate and concern with the quality of life have destroyed the traditional logic of business enterprise ironically at the moment of its greatest material success. The authors conclude with the suggestion that a new political economy could well produce a significantly new relationship between public and private enterprise and society at large. This thoughtful and original book can be confidently expected to have a major impact on the course of this important debate.
