Out Of Print... The objectives of this programmed text are to present the basic concepts and principles of the analysis of forces and moments in statically determinate structural elements and the calculation of stresses and strains at any position within such elements. The approach adopted by the authors actively encourages students to think in terms of basic concepts rather than to concentrate on the solution of standard textbook problems. While the material treated in each programme is complete in itself, the student will derive the greatest benefit from the book if it is used in conjunction with general lectures and demonstrations for three-dimensional concepts. The format of most of the programmes is linear but a branching technique has been used for some topics which have been found particularly difficult in practice. Further test problems are included throughout the book. A unique feature introduced by the authors is a flow chart of programmes to facilitate course planning by lecturers and to enable students to follow the best learning sequence. This book will generally cover most of the syllabus for first-year courses in Strength of Materials and Theory of Structures in universities and polytechnics.
