Description

Out Of Print... Northwards By Sea is an account of all the steamers and motor vessels which have plied to Caithness and the northern isles of Orkney and Shetland since the 1830s. In fair weather and in foul, in peace and in war, regular services conveying essential mails and cargo have been maintained, and every year thousands of passengers are carried to Britains most northerly outposts by ships hearing the names of the northern saints. This book was first published in 1966 but has long been out of print. The new edition has been extensively revised, re-illustrated and brought fully up to date by the author, who is professor of Scottish History in Edinburgh University. Besides dealing with the main routes, there are chapters on the vessels serving the Pentland Firth crossing, the North Isles of Orkney and the North Isles of Shetland. Northwards By Sea contains a complete list of ships operated on the route by the North of Scotland Company, its predecessors and its present day successor, the P & 0 Group. The book is also lavishly illustrated with thirty pages of plates illustrating the ships and ship plans. Not only a piece of transport history, which will interest all who are fascinated by the sea and ships, this is a picture of a way of life with episodes tragic and heroic, grave and humorous.
