Cardiology

The development of Postgraduate Medical Education has been one of the most exciting features of the medical scene in Great Britain during the last few years. Many Postgraduate Medical Centres are running extremely active programmes, and none more so than Peterborough, who are fortunate to have a new District Hospital and a new, purpose-built, Postgraduate Centre. One of Peterboroughs important innovations has been the introduction of a major annual symposium at which speakers of high professional repute are invited to discuss growing points and areas of special importance within a given subject, and to deal with topics of interest to both hospital medical staff and general practitioners. This symposium on Cardiology was devoted to a group of disorders which constitute the biggest cause of mortality in our society. Under the Chairmanship of Professor Sir Melville Arnott and Professor J. Shillingford, the subjects covered were the medical and surgical aspects of: Ischaemic Heart Disease, Hypertension, Cardiac Arrhythmias, Congenital Heart Disease, Management of Heart Disease in Obstretrics and Surgery, Treatment of Heart Failure. Each paper was presented by an established expert on his or her subject. This book therefore presents a thoroughly expert, practical and succinct review of cardiological problems expressly intended for the busy practising doctor, and doubtless many people all over the world will be grateful to the initiative of Peterborough in gathering the symposium together and in pubhshing their valuable proceedings for a wider audience.
