Out Of Print... Inherit the Land is the chronicle of the possession by Israel and Judah of the Biblical lands. It begins with Cain, the tragic toiler on the desert; it proceeds through the calling of Abraham and the exile of Joseph to the epic journey of Moses with his people from Egypt to 'the Promised Land'. Like Merchants previous novels, Joshua, Fire from the Heights and A Bundle of Papyrus, it seeks to bring living actuality to the sparse Biblical narrators. Moelw Merchant was horn in Port Talbot and educated at University College. Cardiff, where he was President of the Union and read English and History. He became a Reader at the University of Vales, Professor of English at the Uniniversity of Exeter and Willett Professor at the University of Chicago. He was Canon and Chancellor of Salisbury Cathedral and then returned to Wales to become Vicar of Llanddewi-brefi. He now lives in Leamington Spa. Apart from many works of academic criticism, he has published three books of poety, Breaking the Code (1975), No Dark Glass (1979) and Confrontation of Angels (1986). He has written many lbretti for Alun Hoddinott, including The Tree of life (the Three Choirs Festival, 1972). His autobiography, Fragmentc of Life, was given a Welsh Arts Council literary Award in 1991. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Prompted by his friend Barbara Hepworth, he became a sculptor and has had over thirty one-man shows. He has shared three exhibitions with Josef Herman.
