Out Of Print... Acta Sanctorum illustrates the full and varied range of Lengyel's shorter writings and includes a novella-the title story. The stories are grouped into three parts: the first consists of early writings, mostly of the thirties; the secondcontains the Siberian stories-short, immensely powerful and lyrical; the third group is set in the present day Hungary, mostly around Lengyel's native Lake Balaton, and these stories are among his most original work. Last of all comes the parable of the wise man, Yussayn, who lived many centuries ago in Bokhara, which forms an epilogue to the collection. Jozsef Lengyel's 'fine artistic honesty, his stark, unfaltering realism' (New Statesman), and his confrontation of the most poignant problems of our age, have established him as a major European writer. In recent years he has frequently been compared with Solzhenitsyn.
